Meridia is a diet aid used for treating obesity. Meridia should be used with a reduced calorie diet.Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking dextromethorphan, dihydroergotamine, imidazoles (eg, itraconazole, ketoconazole), lithium, narcotic analgesics (eg, codeine, fentanyl, meperidine), pentazocine, SSRIs (eg, fluoxetine), serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonists (eg, sumatriptan), tryptophan, ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), or cyclosporine. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including kidney or liver disease; heart disease; increased blood pressure; bleeding problems; narrow-angle glaucoma; gallbladder problems; underactive thyroid; seizures; allergies; pregnancy; or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you have a history of mental or mood problems (eg, depression) or suicidal thoughts or actions. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have an eating disorder (eg, anorexia, bulimia); uncontrolled or severe high blood pressure; hardening of the arteries; fast or irregular heartbeat; heart failure; increased blood pressure in the lungs; or if you have had a stroke. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have severe liver or kidney problems or if you are on dialysis for severe kidney problems. This medicine should not be used in CHILDREN younger than 16 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed. Unless otherwise directed by your doctor, THIS MEDICINE SHOULD BE TAKEN IN THE MORNING to avoid sleeping problems. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature, at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C), in a tightly closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE IF you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or take this medicine for longer than prescribed. Exceeding the recommended dose or taking this medicine for longer than prescribed may be habit-forming. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL OR USE MEDICINES THAT MAY CAUSE DROWSINESS (eg, sleep aids, muscle relaxers) while you are using this medicine; it may add to their effects. SEROTONIN SYNDROME OR NEUROLEPTIC MALIGNANT SYNDROME (NMS)-like reactions are possibly fatal syndromes that can be caused by this medicine. Your risk may be greater if you take this medicine with certain other medicines (eg, "triptans", MAOIs, antipsychotics [eg, aripiprazole, risperidone]). Symptoms may include agitation; confusion; hallucinations; coma; fever; fast or irregular heartbeat; tremor; excessive sweating; incoordination; rigid muscles; blood pressure changes; and nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Contact your doctor at once if you have any of these symptoms. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINES, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine. FOR WOMEN: USE AN EFFECTIVE METHOD OF BIRTH CONTROL while you are taking this medicine. IF YOU BECOME PREGNANT, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using this medicine while pregnant. IT IS NOT KNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS FOUND in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine. SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include back pain; constipation; dizziness; dry mouth; flu-like symptoms; headache; increased cough; increased or decreased appetite; indigestion; joint pain; migraine; nasal inflammation; nausea; nervousness; painful menstruation; sinus inflammation; sleeplessness; sore throat; upset stomach; or weakness. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience agitation; anxiety; change in amount of urine; chest pain; clumsiness; confusion; difficulty breathing; disorientation; excitement; eye pain; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; high fever; increased sweating; large, unchanging pupils; loss of consciousness; mood or mental changes (eg, depression, mania, psychosis, thoughts of suicide or suicide attempt); one-sided weakness; restlessness; seizures; shivering; shortness of breath; stomach pain; swelling of the feet, ankles, or legs; tremors; unusual bruising or bleeding; vision problems; vomiting; or weakness. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue.
